On-line Monetary Transactions

In January, 1997 about 3,000 netizens responded to our survey and they told us about their on-line buying habits.

  • Slightly more than half the sample (52%) has conducted some type of on-line transaction.
  • Almost all have purchased a product or service.
  • Solicitation seems to have occurred mostly at the web site and has typically been followed up with a purchase.
  • On-line purchase has been driven by convenience and time savings.
  • The key reasons deterring on-line purchase is a lack of trust in internet security and in the companies making the offers. An assurance of unbreakable internet security would prompt more people to start conducting business over the net.
  • The majority of the sample is interested in purchasing on-line. Many simply haven't had such services available to them.
  • Over 80% believe that on-line shopping and transactions will become a way of life in the near future. The time frame for this to occur is believed to be about 1-2 years from now.

You can have the entire report, which includes crosstabs, tables, and demographic information for $1,350. For information, please call Janet Westergaard at 310-373-1894 (she'll usually answer her phone between 8:30a.m.-5:00p.m. PST), or send her an email message at westergaard@mindspring.com.
